Antic demands a response

Serbia coach Radomir Antic has told his players they must improve if they are to stand any chance against Germany

The White Eagles suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Ghana in their opening game, a result which leaves them struggling to qualify from Group D.

And with Joachim Loew's side to come at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Friday, Antic knows Serbia must be at their very best, having seen Germany demolish Australia 4-0 on Sunday.

"They (Germany) played a very good quality game and, unfortunately, we lost in our first game," said Antic.

"We are quite conscious of the fact that we didn't play at the level we are used to in the game against Ghana, and that game showed us that we have to be much more relaxed when we play (on Friday).

"We must not have any burden preventing us from reaching our goal and each player has to do better than he has done before.

"I am sure every player will manage to find the special energy needed to win against a very good opponent.

"We are quite aware of the situation we are in but, objectively speaking, everything depends on other games that will be played.

"Even if we draw, maybe we will manage to go to the second round, which is our great wish."

Antic also reserved special praise for Loew for his courage to select a young group of players for the tournament in South Africa.

"The team (Germany) has a lot of new players, young players who are gifted, and with what they have shown so far, they have managed to win places in the squad," added Antic.

"Their coach was very right when he decided to put them into the German squad.

"It is a team which has a good balance between experienced players and young players."
