Vuvuzelas silenced now

They were one of the defining features of the World Cup, but the vuvuzela will not provide a back drop to games across Europe this season

A string of top clubs have banned the monotonous instrument, whose buzzing disrupted many games at SA2010.

Among them are the vast majority of Premiership sides in England, with only top-flight new boys Blackpool bucking the trend.

Bundesliga, La Liga and Seria A teams have followed suit, while a string of sports events in America have also extended the prohibition.

At the World Cup, organisers faced calls to ban vuvuzelas after receiving complaints from broadcasters, who said the noise was interfering with viewers' enjoyment of matches.

But Fifa rejected the requests, insisting that vuvuzelas were part and parcel of African culture, and should be welcomed.
